Halloween is almost here. It's three weeks away, you say? Well, my Halloween kick off begins when the first end display of candy goes up in the grocery store. Rows and rows of candy line up and down the shelves, from dark chocolate M&M's to Skittles and Tootsie Rolls.
Retailers have us with Halloween. For most of us, I say we just go with the flow, and be done with it. Do not spend minutes agonizing over a bag of Snickers. Don't tell yourself you can have a nice fruit salad when you get home. Put the bag in your cart. You now have your personal stash of Halloween candy. I get my Hershey Kisses early, and stash them in the freezer. I, then, am able to walk by Halloween candy displays stacked to the roof, as I know I have my own stash. Do not underestimate the power this gives you.
LT takes care of Halloween candy preparation for our home. We're not talking a couple of bags of M & M Halloween packs & a jumbo bag of tootsie rolls. Oh, he includes those in his x, but he also purchases an additional 20 bags of assorted "good" candy. Every year I wonder if he knows something I don't know. Has he distributed Halloween cards at T-ball games with our address on it as the place to go for candy? I ask these questions to myself, as he creates this huge display of candy for me to see. LT does know how to pick good candy, without question.
LT doesn't only buy a huge quantity of candy, but he also buys candy EARLY; I mean like right now early. I make him hide it as soon as he finishes the annual display ceremony. Before I started MY tradition of not knowing where the stash is, I used to sneak into the guest bedroom for a piece of candy. I would scurry around trying to decide what kind I wanted. Since I couldn't decide, I would just take one of each. Do not forget how EARLY he bought the candy, affording me many opportunities for these clandestine trips. I knew this could not become an annual Halloween tradition. Thus, the Halloween candy hiding tradition began.
One year I did ask him why he bought so MUCH candy. He said when he was growing up he wanted his house to be known as the best house for Halloween candy. No worries there- kids from surrounding neighborhoods come to our neighborhood just to visit LT- he adores it. He sits on the front porch handing out handfuls of candy to princesses, pirates and ghosts. Every year I have to drag him inside; he doesn't want to miss giving candy to a single child who might wander past our house on Halloween night.
I must swear, under oath, they all the children are home, in bed. He has done his job. He has retained his title of the house with the best candy. He, reluctantly, comes inside.
They say Halloween is for kids.
